Organization: Eastern Connecticut Pathology Consultants (ECPC)

Location: Manchester, CT

Partner Since: 2019

Size and Reach: Eastern Connecticut Pathology Consultants (ECPC) is a private pathology practice serving hospitals, physicians, and patients across Connecticut and Massachusetts. The group includes 24 board-certified pathologists and supports community hospitals, outpatient GI centers, cancer centers, and physician office laboratories throughout southern New England.

Partner Overview: Eastern Connecticut Pathology Consultants (ECPC) is a pathology organization supporting anatomic pathology operations across its care network. Through a long-term partnership with ELLKAY, ECPC has built the infrastructure and interoperability workflows needed to keep pathology data connected across EMRs, LIS, imaging systems, and digital pathology platforms.

Story Overview

Eastern Connecticut Pathology Consultants (ECPC) turned a strategic growth challenge into a scalable, technology-enabled expansion through its partnership with ELLKAY. What began as a need to stay competitive evolved into a multi-year transformation, spanning integration, laboratory expansion, workflow modernization, digital pathology, and measurable client value.

Recognizing the limitations of a hospital-based model, ECPC set out to diversify services, expand into new laboratory settings, and build the infrastructure necessary to scale.

That vision accelerated through investments in internal IT expertise and an anatomic pathology LIS. To execute quickly and effectively ECPC needed a partner that could keep pace. ELLKAY became the interoperability backbone that turned ECPC’s vision into operational reality.

Challenge

  • AP operations at risk
  • Disrupted hospital system access
  • Critical EMR, LIS, and imaging connectivity needs
  • Need for bi-directional digital pathology workflows
  • Future-ready infrastructure for AI-enabled pathology

Building the foundation for rapid growth

ECPC prioritized interoperability first, selecting ELLKAY before even finalizing its LIS, ensuring speed and flexibility regardless of downstream system decisions. That choice proved critical. Once ECPC selected its AP LIS vendor in early 2020, the organization had only 45 days to complete the LIS build and establish interfaces with both the hospital’s MEDITECH EHR and their external provider multispecialty practices’ Allscripts EHR.

Together, ECPC and ELLKAY developed a repeatable integration framework that would support not just the initial implementation, but also a scalable model for future growth.  This became the blueprint for subsequent expansions and implementations.

At the same time, ECPC broadened its services beyond traditional pathology operations.  The organization began helping clients establish physician office laboratories, supporting laboratory construction, providing medical director oversight, and extending its LIS into client environments. This combination of operational expertise and technical interoperability created a powerful platform for scalable growth.

Solving complex client needs with tailored integration

One of the clearest examples of the ECPC + ELLKAY partnership involved a client with both general practices and a large OB-GYN population.  The project was executed in two phases to support both foundational connectivity and advanced clinical workflows.

ELLKAY connected multiple EMRs and laboratory systems, including Allscripts and ModMed, creating a reliable foundation for data exchange across disparate environments.

In the second phase, the team enabled a more advanced workflow to support a single, integrated report combining Pap results, ancillary testing, and relevant clinical information. By aggregating data from multiple systems, ECPC delivered a comprehensive report that provided the clinician with the information needed to guide patient treatment and follow-up care. The impact was immediate and measurable: ECPC was able to bring testing in-house and recapture more than $1million in annual revenue.

“There is no way we could have pulled this off if we didn’t have ELLKAY’s ability to be agile and work with us on compressed timelines.” – Kristen Conley, CIO, ECPC

Turning interoperability into a growth engine

As ECPC expanded across hospitals, physician office labs, dermatology, GI, and surgery centers, ELLKAY’s role scaled alongside it, supporting increasingly complex, multi-interface integrations across diverse EMRs and environments.

With a strong interoperability foundation in place, ECPC was able to move significantly faster. Proven integration models were replicated across new clients, reducing implementation timelines from months to weeks and directly accelerating client onboarding and revenue generation.

The partnership also enabled real-time adaptability. During a major dermatopathology rollout, ELLKAY quickly adjusted integrations to support enhanced functionality in ModMed, delivering richer clinical data and a more seamless provider experience. This level of agility became a defining advantage as ECPC expanded into new specialties and care settings.

Supporting resilience during disruption

By 2023, ECPC entered a new phase of transformation with the launch of its digital pathology initiative, supported by dedicated infrastructure and close collaboration with ELLKAY across connectivity and design.

That investment proved critical months later when a major cyber event caused a prolonged hospital outage. Because ECPC had established independent infrastructure and interoperability workflows, the organization was able to shift AP operations to its own LIS and maintain connectivity throughout the 45+ day disruption.

This period highlighted the strength of the partnership, with ELLKAY operating as an extension of ECPC’s team to support continuity while advancing parallel strategic priorities. More importantly, it proved that independent infrastructure and strong interoperability can significantly reduce operational risk during periods of disruption.

Advancing digital pathology and future-ready workflows

By 2025, ECPC had refined the integration and workflow model it needed to operationalize digital pathology at scale. The organization went live with primary digital workflows in dermatology and GI, supported by bi-directional communication between its LIS and imaging management systems through ELLKAY.

These integrations enabled seamless workflows between the pathology information and image management systems, improving pathologist efficiency, patient safety, supporting contextual launch capabilities, and laying the groundwork for expansion into additional specialties.

Just as importantly, ECPC established the infrastructure necessary to support future AI-enabled pathology workflows through normalized, integrated data streams.

A partnership built on execution

The ECPC and ELLKAY story is defined not just by technology, but by shared vision, strong execution, and measurable outcomes. ECPC began with limited digital infrastructure and a strategic need to diversify beyond the traditional hospital model. Over time, the organization built a scalable pathology growth model that included physician office labs, hospital integrations, subspecialty expansion, digital pathology, and consulting-based services. ELLKAY provided the interoperability infrastructure that transformed ECPC’s strategy into a scalable repeatable operating model that could accelerate implementations, support new client models, and adapt quickly when conditions changed.

Together, ECPC and ELLKAY demonstrated that integration is more than an IT function. When done right, it becomes the foundation for growth, resilience, operational efficiency, client satisfaction, and financial return.
