To me, innovation in health IT is about closing the gap between the rapid pace of technological advancement and the often slower-moving regulatory frameworks that govern healthcare. While cutting-edge solutions—like telehealth—offer transformative potential, they’re frequently hindered by complex, state-specific regulations and licensing requirements. Real innovation ensures these solutions are not only powerful but also seamlessly compliant and easy to use.
A particularly exciting area is data integration. Imagine a truly unified platform where data from multiple sources can be accessed, shared, and acted upon effortlessly. This kind of interoperability elevates care delivery by enabling more informed decisions and better patient outcomes.
At its core, innovation in health IT means harmonizing technology with regulation to build a more efficient, interconnected, and data-driven healthcare ecosystem.
My journey into healthcare IT leadership was born from a passion for both programming and people. While I began with a technical foundation in programming, I soon realized that my true strength and passion lie in connecting with people and improving systems that directly impact lives.
At Concentra, I had the opportunity to help build one of the first onsite/near-site clinics, which opened my eyes to how technology could dramatically enhance healthcare delivery. From there, I gravitated toward roles that allowed me to bridge the gap between tech and patient care, including early experiences in telehealth at MDLIVE.
Later, at CirrusMD, I shifted focus to operations—building a national clinical network and promoting interoperability through a chat-first telehealth platform. My time at Babylon expanded this scope further as we undertook global risk for Medicaid populations. Leveraging data to drive risk stratification and tailored interventions showed me the power of analytics in improving population health.
Each chapter of my career has reinforced the same belief: when thoughtfully applied, technology and data can transform healthcare delivery, making it more accessible, efficient, and patient-centric.
Given the rapid evolution of healthcare technology, how do you and your team stay ahead of the curve?
Staying current in health IT requires a continuous loop of learning and open-mindedness. I regularly read industry articles, attend conferences, and exchange insights with peers. But beyond that, I encourage my team to experiment boldly. We’re not afraid to explore unconventional ideas—sometimes the best innovations start with a “what if?”
We also look beyond healthcare for inspiration. Other industries often solve problems in ways we can adapt to our heavily regulated environment. Despite the constraints, our guiding principle remains clear: always put the patient first. By centering both patient and clinician needs, we foster an environment where meaningful, and sustainable innovation can thrive.
Fragmentation is one of the biggest hurdles. While many startups and vendors offer brilliant point solutions—whether for claims, risk scoring, or patient engagement—the real challenge lies in integrating them into a cohesive system.
It’s not just about building more tools; it’s about ensuring they connect across layers of legacy infrastructure. A true end-to-end solution must span everything from patient identification and onboarding to continuous care and remote monitoring, leveraging wearables and smart devices for real-time engagement.
Creating that seamless, patient-centered journey requires thoughtful design and long-term vision. Otherwise, we risk reinforcing the very silos we aim to eliminate.
The ability to make a tangible difference. Every time we improve system workflows or enable better data access, we empower clinicians to deliver higher-quality care. When technology helps reduce burnout or speeds up a diagnosis, the impact on patients and providers is immediate and real.
Knowing that our work supports better outcomes, greater efficiency, and more compassionate care makes this field deeply fulfilling.
Be bold. Speak up. And most importantly, stay true to who you are. Leadership isn't just about titles—it’s about empowering others, sharing your knowledge, and creating an environment where your team can thrive. Prioritize continuous learning and embrace every opportunity to grow.
Also, surround yourself with people who challenge and complement you. There is power in collaboration, especially in traditionally male-dominated spaces. By supporting each other, we build a stronger, more inclusive future for healthcare leadership.
Creating balance is an ongoing practice, especially in leadership roles where the lines can easily become blurred. For me, clarity and boundaries are key. I carve out time for personal routines—whether it's early morning walks, family dinners, or simply stepping away from screens in the evening—and I treat that time as non-negotiable.
Encouraging flexible work hours, respecting time off, and recognizing that people have full lives outside of work all contribute to a healthier, more sustainable work culture.
Lastly, I try to stay present—whether I’m in a meeting or spending time with family. Multitasking may seem efficient, but intentional focus is what truly brings balance and fulfillment.
Fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion (D&I) within the FlyteHealth organization is a strategic one. Healthcare serves diverse populations, and our teams should reflect the varied backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences of the people we aim to support. We actively seek diverse talent by partnering with inclusive hiring platforms and expanding our candidate pools beyond traditional networks.
